No. 1 Mater Dei hosts Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas in matchup of nation’s top two teams.

This week's high school football schedule in California is headlined by national No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) taking on No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.).

These teams squared off two years ago in Las Vegas and Mater Dei walked away with a 24-21 win. Jordon Davison and Nasir Wyatt had great games that night for the Monarchs as sophomores. Now the duo is back again for the matchup as seniors.

A trio of seniors in quarterback Melvin Spicer IV and wide receivers Brandon Gaea and Derek Meadows have led the way for the Gaels, who have wins over Kahuku (Hawaii) and No. 11 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) this season.

No. 5 Orange Lutheran (Orange) and No. 9 Centennial (Corona) will also welcome out-of-state teams.

Orange Lutheran will host national No. 13 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, Md.) in a matchup of 2-0 teams. St. Frances put up 75 points over the two previous weeks in wins over teams from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Orange Lutheran is ranked No. 19 in the country and averages 33 points per game. Senior Nebraska commit T.J. Lateef has completed nearly 79 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns for the Lancers.

No. 9 Centennial will face Timpview (Provo, Utah), the No. 3 ranked team in Utah. Timpview is 1-1 and the loss came narrowly to Lone Peak, the No. 17 team in the country. The Huskies are looking to rebound after losses to No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 8 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita).

No. 25 Clovis North (Fresno) will test its 2-0 record against No. 4 JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano). Junior quarterback Lucas Smith has been nearly perfect for Clovis North, completing 18 of his 23 passes for four touchdowns this season. The Broncos defense has allowed just six points this season.

JSerra Catholic sits at No. 26 in the nation with a pair of 35-7 wins over Sierra Canyon and Aquinas.

In Northern California, No. 12 Junipero Serra (San Mateo) will travel to take on No. 10 De La Salle (Concord) after each team had impressive wins over Sac-Joaquin Section powers Friday. De La Salle defeated Grant 42-14 while Serra defeated Folsom 22-21 on a 44-yard field goal from junior Brody Smith.

Serra head coach Patrick Walsh also makes a return to his alma mater, where he rushed for more than 4,000 yards in his De La Salle career as the Spartans began their 151-game winning streak in 1992.
