Football Recap: Las Cruces Starts Season with Victory Against Mayfield

Las Cruces had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They blew past the Mayfield Trojans 61-6 on Friday. With the Bulldawgs ahead 42-0 at the half, the match was all but over already.

Daniel Amaro was a one-man wrecking crew as he rushed for 126 yards and three TDs on only 11 carries, and also picked up 105 receiving yards and one score. Gunnar Guardiola was another key player, throwing for 201 yards and three touchdowns on only nine passes.

Las Cruces' defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB five times. That dominant display was truly a team effort as five different players picked up one apiece. Another thorn in Mayfield's side was Denton Walter, who picked up a sack and made 11 total tackles (3.0 for loss).

Coming up, Las Cruces will look to takes advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they takes on Volcano Vista at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Mayfield, they will venture away from home to take on West Mesa at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
