Basketball Recap: Arvin Takes a Loss

Arvin extended their losing streak to five on Friday, dropping them down to 7-7. They lost to the Coalinga Horned Toads on the road by a 56-39 margin. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Horned Toads this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 56-54 back in November.

When it comes to explaining why Arvin lost, don't look at Melina Gracia. Despite the final result, she went 6-for-14 to rack up 17 points and eight boards. Gracia is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last three games she's played. Mariana Soto was another key player, putting up eight points and 16 rebounds.

As for Coalinga, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.0 points over those games.

Coalinga was led to victory by Brooklyn Davis and Addie Love. Davis dropped a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards, while Love shot 62% from the field en route to 20 points in addition to five rebounds and five steals. Love has become a key player for the Horned Toads: the team is undefeated when she posts at least three steals, but 0-3 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Kylie Carpenter, who went 6-for-12 on her way to 12 points.

Arvin didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 50-33 win against East Bakersfield on the 13th. As for Coalinga, they have also already played their next game, a 40-32 loss against Porterville on the 13th.
