Basketball Game Preview: The Webb Schools Gauls vs. Mesa Grande Academy Cardinals

The Webb Schools Gauls will take on the Mesa Grande Academy Cardinals at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with seven consecutive losses dating back to last season for The Webb Schools and four for Mesa Grande Academy dating back to last season.

The Webb Schools is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against Montclair on Tuesday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. The Webb Schools was outmatched by Montclair and fell 34-7. The match marked the Gauls' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Defeat or not, The Webb Schools got some senior leadership from Lauren Gutierrez and Pristine Thomas. Gutierrez posted four points, while Thomas earned a point along with 12 boards and three steals. Thomas is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games she's played dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, Mesa Grande Academy had to start their season on the road last Tuesday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They were dealt a 52-15 loss at the hands of Woodcrest Christian.

The Webb Schools' defeat dropped their record down to 0-6. As for Mesa Grande Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 0-1.

The Webb Schools was able to grind out a solid victory over Mesa Grande Academy when the teams last played back in December of 2019, winning 48-38. The rematch might be a little tougher for The Webb Schools since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
