Basketball Game Preview: Newport Buffaloes vs. Greenwood Wildcats

Newport hasn't had much luck against Greenwood recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Newport Buffaloes will square off against the Greenwood Wildcats at 7:15 p.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Having struggled with three defeats in a row, Newport turned things around against Midd-West two weeks ago. They came out on top against the Mustangs by a score of 36-25.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Greenwood). They secured a 57-51 W over Veritas Academy on Friday.

Newport better focus on containing Bekah Brinser and Sylvia Gantt as the pair were huge in Greenwood's win. Brinser dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten steals, while Gantt posted 16 points. The dominant performance also gave Brinser a new career-high in blocks (three). Another player making a difference was Sophie Myers, who put up seven points and five rebounds.

Greenwood pushed their record up to 8-2 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season. As for Newport, their victory ended a six-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-3.

Newport came up short against Greenwood in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, falling 36-23. Can Newport avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
