Football Game Preview: Rivera Raiders vs. Weslaco East Wildcats + Official Tickets

Rivera is 0-4 against Weslaco East since August of 2015 but things could change on Friday. The Raiders will venture away from home to square off against the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. Neither Rivera nor Weslaco East posted many points in their last games, so it might be the defenses that decide this one.

On Friday, Rivera ended up a good deal behind Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial and lost 20-6.

Rivera's defeat came about despite a quality game from Gabriel Gonzalez, who rushed for 106 yards on only 14 carries. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 55 yards.

Meanwhile, Weslaco East played a tough contest on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They had to suffer through a 65-7 loss at the hands of Flour Bluff. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 803rd, while the Hornets are ranked 292nd).

Rivera's loss dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Weslaco East, they now have a losing record of 2-3.

Friday's game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Gonzalez and Jay Herrera. Gonzalez just won't slow down this season and has averaged 86 rushing yards per game. Herrera has been a dominant force too and has averaged 117.2 rushing yards per game.

Rivera was dealt a bruising 41-2 defeat at the hands of Weslaco East in their previous matchup back in October of 2024. Can the Raiders avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
