Baseball Game Preview: Murphysboro Red Devils vs. Chester Yellowjackets

The Murphysboro Red Devils will head out to challenge the Chester Yellowjackets at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Murphysboro has struggled recently with five defeats in a row, while Chester will arrive with three straight wins.

Nashville hit Murphysboro with a five-run sixth inning on Wednesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Red Devils lost 11-4 to the Hornets.

Murphysboro saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jackson Graff, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.

Chester came out on top against Okawville on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive ten-run fifth inning. The Yellowjackets were the clear victors by a 17-0 margin over the Rockets. That looming 17-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Yellowjackets yet this season.

Trayton Peters made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Chester is 5-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 6-10 otherwise. Peters was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.

Chester was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .342 or higher in five consecutive games.

Murphysboro's loss dropped their record down to 4-21. As for Chester, the victory got them back to even at 11-11.

Murphysboro came out on top in a nail-biter against Chester in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, sneaking past 4-2. Will the Red Devils repeat their success, or do the Yellowjackets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
