Previously-unbeaten Tompkins goes down, leaving door open for California team to claim top spot for winter season.

Entering last weekend's Texas Class 6A girls soccer title game in Georgetown, Tompkins (Katy) was a win away from securing not only an unbeaten state championship season but potentially the final No. 1 national ranking for the winter.

But Southlake Carroll had other ideas, spoiling Tompkins' coronation in unthinkable fashion with a 5-0 win Saturday.

Madison Drenowatz notched a hat trick and Carroll led comfortably 3-0 at the half. The Dragons finished the season 28-1-2, winning their second state title since 2008.

Tompkins, which had been No. 1 in the Fab 50 since Feb. 5, fell to No. 12. That opened the door for California section and regional champ JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) to move into the top spot in the final edition of the rankings.
