Baseball Recap: Coventry Comes Up Short

Coventry fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Smithfield on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Sentinels by a score of 5-4. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Oakers of the 7-2 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2025.

Riley Wheeler made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Griffin Frenze, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double.

Coventry dropped their record down to 3-15 with the defeat, which was their 11th straight at home. As for Smithfield, their record is now 11-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Coventry will challenge South Kingstown at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Smithfield, they will take on North Providence at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Cougars will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Sentinels surely won't give up without a fight.
