Football Recap: Kirtland Central Broncos vs. Grants Pirates
Kirtland Central lost against Grants back in September of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Broncos took a blow against the Pirates, falling 66-14. The Broncos were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 47-14.
Chance Aspaas threw for 143 yards and one touchdown. Keoni Scott was his top target, picking up 53 receiving yards and one TD. On the ground, Kayben Dowdy rushed for 35 yards and one score.
Tristin Fernandez was his usual excellent self, throwing for 350 yards and five touchdowns on only 15 passes, while also punching in one rushing score for Grants. Those 350 passing yards gave Fernandez a new career-high. Cardenio Chavez was in the mix too, providing Grants with three scores.
This is the second loss in a row for Kirtland Central and nudges their season record down to 1-4. As for Grants, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-1.
Kirtland Central will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Bernalillo at 7:00 p.m. on October 3. The Spartans' defense has only allowed 13.8 points per game this season, so the Broncos' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Grants, they have already played their next game, a 51-0 win against Aztec on the 26th.
