Football Recap: Colby Comes Up Short

Colby extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping them down to 1-4. They were dealt a 53-24 defeat at the hands of the Holcomb Longhorns. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas football rankings (they are ranked 161st, while the Longhorns are ranked 36th).

When it comes to explaining why Colby lost, don't look at Cody Wright. Despite the final result, he picked up 107 receiving yards and one score, and also rushed for 52 yards and one TD on only five carries. Wright's longest reception was for an incredible 96 yards.

As for Holcomb, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 5-0. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 36.8 points this season.

Holcomb's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Chasyn Cosner led the charge by rushing for 173 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 8.7 yards per carry. Another player making a difference was Luke Thyne, who picked up 100 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Colby will face off against rival Goodland at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Holcomb is set to challenge their familiar foe Scott at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Longhorns 11.4, the Beavers 6) so any points scored will be well earned.
