Baseball Recap: Merrill Takes a Loss

Merrill had lost four straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 6-8 to make it five. They lost 16-1 to the Ithaca Yellowjackets. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Vandals of the 6-4 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2025.

As for Ithaca, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-9 record this season. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For Ithaca's part, Carsen Shankel made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Shankel has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most runs he has posted over his last 13 contests.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Connor McMurphy, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Jacson Whitmore was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

While Merrill had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
