Basketball Recap: San Diego Comes Up Short

San Diego was the 43-39 winner over La Jolla when they last played one another back in January of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. The San Diego Cavers took a 37-33 hit to the loss column at the hands of the La Jolla Vikings. While the Cavers didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Vikings 12-7 in the first quarter.

When it comes to explaining why San Diego lost on Friday, don't look at Gianna Woodson. Despite the final result, she went 8 of 19 on her way to 21 points and five boards. Woodson has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last seven times she's played. Saiyana Hughes also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Even though they lost, San Diego smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 25 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 32 consecutive games dating back to last season.

La Jolla was led to victory by Reagan Bennett and Soila Chadwick. Bennett posted 15 points along with six rebounds and four steals, while Chadwick earned nine points and five boards. That makes it four consecutive games in which Bennett has scored at least a third of La Jolla's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Drew Bennett, who had six points and nine rebounds.

San Diego has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-10 record this season. As for La Jolla, they pushed their record up to 13-6 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road.

San Diego has already played their next contest, a 61-50 loss against Carlsbad on the 11th. As for La Jolla, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 54-51 defeat against High Tech SD on the 14th.
