Basketball Recap: St. Mary's Academy Comes Up Short

If St. Mary's Academy was riding high fresh off their 65-36 takedown of Maria Carrillo back in December of 2024, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The St. Mary's Academy Belles had to suffer through a 83-50 loss at the hands of the Union Titans. While losing is never fun, the Belles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 182nd in California, while the Titans are ranked ninth in Washington).

St. Mary's Academy lost on Friday despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Layia King, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds. King has been hot for a while, having posted ten or more rebounds the last 27 times she's played. Ebbony Wilson was another key player, putting up 13 points and eight rebounds.

St. Mary's Academy moved to 8-5 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for Union, their victory bumped their record up to 7-1.

St. Mary's Academy didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 54-37 win against Grant on the 28th. As for Union, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 77-53 victory against South Salem on the 28th.
