Football Game Preview: Humboldt Cubs vs. Bluestem Lions

Humboldt is a perfect 4-0 against Bluestem since September of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Cubs will head out to face off against the Lions at 7:00 p.m. Humboldt has given up an average of 35 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Humboldt is headed into the matchup out to prove that what happened against Prairie View on Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. The Cubs were beaten by the Buffalos 56-14. The Cubs were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 33-0.

Mason Sterling put forth a good effort for the losing side as he rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 40 points the game before, Bluestem was a bit more limited in their game on Friday. They took a hard 30-12 fall against Eureka. The Lions have struggled against the Tornadoes recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.

Although Bluestem took the loss, they still got scores from Axton Vice and Ayson Shepherd.

Bluestem's loss dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Humboldt, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-4.

Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Humboldt has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 178 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Bluestem struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 235.2 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.

Everything came up roses for Humboldt against Bluestem in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, as the team secured a 50-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cubs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
