Basketball Recap: Rancho Dominguez Lobos vs. San Pedro Pirates
The Rancho Dominguez Lobos lost against the San Pedro Pirates back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. Rancho Dominguez took a serious blow against the Pirates, falling 81-21. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Rancho Dominguez in their matchups with the Pirates: they've now lost nine in a row.
Despite the loss, Rancho Dominguez saw an underclassman step up: Audrey Baker scored 12 points along with eight rebounds. That was a full 57.1% of Rancho Dominguez's points, marking the 17th time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Rancho Dominguez struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
San Pedro's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Shalia Coleman, who scored 17 points. Coleman hasn't dropped below 17 points for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Robyn Lynn Smith, who scored 16 points.
Rancho Dominguez has not been sharp recently as the team's lost seven of their last eight contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season. As for San Pedro, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-9 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Rancho Dominguez will challenge the Colts at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Carson focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Friday. As for San Pedro, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against the Stars at 10:30 a.m. on January 27th. Mary Star of the Sea has now lost nine straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 22.
