Recap: Georgetown Day Mighty Hoppers vs. Episcopal Maroon
The Georgetown Day Mighty Hoppers are ranked highly in their home state, and on Thursday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of the Episcopal Maroon. Georgetown Day fell just short of Episcopal by a score of 52-49. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Georgetown Day came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked second in District of Columbia, while Episcopal is ranked 25th in Virginia).
Georgetown Day lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Madisyn Moore, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 12 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Nevaeh Roberson, who scored 21 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Ava Sawi continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Episcopal, scoring 25 points along with two steals. Sawi is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Princess Akojenu was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds.
Georgetown Day has been struggling recently, as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-6 record this season. As for Episcopal, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-1.
Georgetown Day will head out on the road to take on Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Episcopal won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Mercersburg Academy at 6:45 p.m. on January 12th. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Nia Henley and Sawi.
