Football Recap: La Joya Starts Season with Win at Home

La Joya took care of business in their home opener on Friday. They strolled past the Rivera Raiders with points to spare, taking the game 45-28. This was payback for the Coyotes, who suffered a 27-14 loss the last time these two teams met.

Owen Benoit was the offensive standout of the matchup as he threw for 170 yards and two TDs on only ten passes, and also punched in one touchdown on the ground. A healthy portion of Benoit's aerial production (110 yards to be exact) went to Dante Perez, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.

Several Raiders players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Gabriel Gonzalez, who rushed for 108 yards and a pair of scores on only ten carries, and also picked up 38 receiving yards and one TD. Ivan Rodriguez was another key player, throwing for 118 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

La Joya has already played their next game, a 48-21 win against Lopez on the 5th. As for Rivera, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 45-44 victory against Edinburg North on the 4th.
