Basketball Recap: Newark Memorial's Losing Streak Is a Thing of the Past

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Irvington, Newark Memorial was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They walked away with a 52-41 victory over the Kennedy Titans. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Cougars as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.

Newark Memorial can attribute much of their success to Angelina Baca, who posted 20 points. Another player making a difference was Bella Wijangco, who had eight points.

Kennedy's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Chloe Buchner, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Buchner a new career-high in points. Payton Siquig was another key player, putting up eight points along with nine boards and three steals.

Newark Memorial's victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 6-9. As for Kennedy, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-5.

Newark Memorial and Kennedy could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. Newark Memorial (ranked 767th) will meet James Logan (ranked 331st) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Kennedy (ranked 569th) will meet Moreau Catholic (ranked 242nd) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
