Basketball Recap: Point Loma Takes a Loss

Point Loma was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their tenth straight defeat. They took a blow against the Christian Patriots, falling 65-14. While losing is never fun, the Pointers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1134th, while the Patriots are ranked 224th).

Point Loma's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of River Hargett, who posted eight points and six boards, and Avery Heckman, who scored two points and ten rebounds. What's more, Hargett also racked up two blocks, the most she's had since back in December of 2024.

Even though they lost, Point Loma smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 17 offensive boards in three consecutive matches.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Christian to victory, but perhaps none more so than Leah Speers, who put up 31 points and six steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Speers has scored at least a third of Christian's points. Another player making a difference was Maepon Johnson, who had 17 points along with eight assists and seven rebounds.

Point Loma's defeat dropped their record down to 4-17. As for Christian, the win (which was their 13th in a row) raised their record to 19-4.

Point Loma has already played their next game, a 27-21 loss against Patrick Henry on the 11th. As for Christian, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 61-11 victory against Madison on the 11th.
