Basketball Recap: Maplewood Tigers vs. Union City Bears
The Maplewood Tigers waltzed into their game on Thursday with four straight wins but they left with five. They walked away with a 55-48 win over Union City. Given Maplewood's advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 219th, while the Bears are ranked 439th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Union City's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brooke Vantassel, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Cathryn Reynolds, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Maplewood pushed their record up to 16-3 with that win, which was their 19th straight at home dating back to last season. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.2 points per game. As for Union City, their defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 8-10.
Maplewood will head out on the road to take on the Orioles at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Rocky Grove has now lost seven straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 29. As for Union City, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against the Panthers at 7:30 p.m.
