Softball Recap: Denver North Starts Season with Win Against the Academy

Denver North had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They put the hurt on The Academy Wildcats with a sharp 13-2 win. The victory was familiar territory for the Vikings, who have now won four matchups in a row dating back to last season.

Veronica Loera-Tafoya was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Loera-Tafoya was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in RBI (four).

In other batting news, Gabriela Diaz was incredible, firing off four runs, two triples, and two doubles while going 4-for-4. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one triple the last four times she's played. Sophia Guerrero was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs.

Denver North was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .515. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .424 or higher in five consecutive games dating back to last season.

Looking ahead, Denver North will be defending their home field for the first time this season when they go up against Aurora Central at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for The Academy, they will square off against Northglenn at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
