Mullen had won five straight at home dating back to last season, but on Saturday they bumped up to 4-0 to make it six. They skirted past the Denver South Ravens 8-7. This was payback for the Mustangs, who suffered a 14-4 defeat the last time these two teams met.
Bayla Slucki spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and two unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Roslyn Frequez was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one stolen base. Maize Jackson was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Mullen kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in six consecutive matches dating back to last season.
As for Denver South, they are on a seven-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4. On the bright side, the seven- run performance marked their highest-scoring contest to date.
On Denver South's side, they also let their pitcher toss all 7.1 innings and she was also dialed-in: Olivia Gibson gave up just two earned (and six unearned) runs on nine hits.
At the plate, Emma Gibson made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with two triples, two stolen bases, and five RBI. She also put up two runs, which were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Jerica Montoa, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Mullen wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 12-11 loss against Forge Christian on the 26th. Denver South has also already played their next matchup (against Vista PEAK Prep), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
