Recap: La Costa Canyon Mavericks vs. Francis Parker Lancers

If the La Costa Canyon Mavericks were feeling good off their 72-42 takedown of the Carlsbad Lancers last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. La Costa Canyon took a hard 72-58 fall against Francis Parker on Monday. While losing is never fun, La Costa Canyon can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 351st, while Francis Parker is ranked 88th).

Several Mavericks players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Keira Colestock, who scored 19 points. Ali DiBenedetto was another key contributor, scoring 13 points.

Francis Parker found their leader in underclassman Brieana Brown, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and 12 rebounds. Brown hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for 14 straight games. Another player making a difference was Charley Pegg, who scored ten points along with five rebounds and three steals.

La Costa Canyon dropped their record down to 9-11 with that defeat, which was their third straight on the road. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.3 points per game. As for Francis Parker, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. La Costa Canyon won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Oceanside at 5:30 p.m. on January 16th. Hopefully Oceanside focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 29 last Saturday. As for Francis Parker, they will head out on the road to face off against Pacific Ridge at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
