Baseball Recap: Normandy Triumphs

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Normandy and Rocky River meet (six straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Tuesday. The Invaders came out on top against the Pirates by a score of 10-6. That's more bragging rights for the Invaders, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Peyton Wolf was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. He is becoming a predictor of Normandy's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 3-1 (and 7-9 when he doesn't). Wolf was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

In other batting news, Jensen Vargo was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Normandy: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 6-9 otherwise. Tommy Hayes was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Normandy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in three consecutive games.

The win got Normandy back to even at 10-10. As for Rocky River, they have been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 12 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-12 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Normandy will venture away from home to challenge Columbia at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Rocky River, they will head out to take on Buckeye at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
