By Zack Poff Sep 25, 2024, 12:00pm

Lee County, Thomas County Central square off in huge Georgia showdown between 5-0 teams.

The only MaxPreps Top 25 matchup of the week just got canceled earlier today because of Hurricane Helene. No. 6 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) was set to travel to Alabama to face off with No. 15 Central (Phenix City, Ala.).

The new MaxPreps Game of the Week features another out-of-state matchup between Maryland and Ohio.

Massillon (Ohio) was one of two new teams to join the MaxPreps Top 25 this week and look for another quality win Friday against DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.). The Stags have won two in a row while outscoring opponents 97-12 since a season-opening 26-10 loss at No. 12 Archbishop Spalding (Severn, Md.).

A matchup between two undefeated teams in the Peach State is taking place Saturday as Lee County (Leesburg, Ga.) hosts Thomas County Central (Thomasville, Ga.), which is 23-3 all-time in the series including wins in each of the past two seasons. The game was originally scheduled for Friday but was moved to Saturday because of Hurricane Helene.

Treston McMillian went down with an injury in the opening game and has been all out year so far. Kekoa Koong has filled in nicely, including during a big win Sept. 6 over Los Alamitos (Calif.). Kahuku's only two losses came against No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and No. 5 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas). These two split last year as Mililani snapped Kahuku's 31-game in-state win streak with a 28-21 victory. O'Dea started the season with a 35-28 win over Graham-Kapowsin (Graham) thanks to a strip-sack by Schwerzel returned for a score in the final minute. Eastside Catholic has outscored its first three opponents 141-34. The Fighting Irish snapped Eastside Catholic's three-game win streak with a 16-7 victory in last year's matchup. The Cougars have won 18 games in a row heading into Friday's showdown against last year's 7A state runner-up.
