Basketball Recap: Paula Zumstein's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Montgomery over Victory Christian Academy

Montgomery has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They took a hard 57-41 fall against the Victory Christian Academy Knights on Monday. The Aztecs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Knights apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Montgomery's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Paula Zumstein, who posted 11 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Datalia Sanchez, who scored seven points.

Victory Christian Academy was led to victory by Shawnelle Sanders and Valentina Lopez. Sanders went 7 of 17 to rack up 17 points in addition to five boards and five steals, while Lopez earned 14 points along with eight assists and eight rebounds. The dominant performance gave Lopez a new career-high in assists. Another player making a difference was Riley Cerdenola, who put up eight points.

Montgomery's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 14-7. As for Victory Christian Academy, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-13.

Montgomery has already played their next match, a 42-41 victory against Mater Dei Catholic on the 29th. As for Victory Christian Academy, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 69-44 win against Olympian on the 29th.
