Recap: Mayfield Cubs vs. Azusa Aztecs
Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up seven more assists than your opponent, a fact the Mayfield Cubs proved on Friday. They came out on top against Azusa by a score of 42-34. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Mayfield.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mayfield to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kristen Awakuni, who scored 17 points. Awakuni has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Jenna Domingo, who scored 10 points along with 8 assists and 6 steals.
Azusa's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Evelin Villalva, who scored 10 points along with 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Villalva hasn't dropped below two steals for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Ruby Untoria, who scored 10 points along with 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
Mayfield's win bumped their record up to 6-4. As for Azusa, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-4.
Mayfield will be playing in front of their home fans against Chadwick at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in California (Chadwick is ranked 785th, while Mayfield is ranked 770th). As for Azusa, they will head out on the road to face off against Roosevelt at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
