Football Recap: Jeffrey Garcia Key Part of Team Effort in Parrots Win

Poly was not the first on the board on Thursday, but they got there more often. They secured a 20-14 W over the Verdugo Hills Dons. The score was all tied up 6-6 at the break, but the Parrots were the better team in the second half.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Poly to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jeffrey Garcia, who rushed for 132 yards and one TD. Those 132 rushing yards gave Garcia a new career-high. Another passer making a difference was George Flores, who threw for 176 yards and one touchdown on only 16 passes.

Despite the loss, Verdugo Hills still got an impressive performance from Jered Smith, who threw for 257 yards and a pair of TDs, and also rushed for 39 yards. Aiden Mejia was another key player, picking up 87 receiving yards and one score.

The win made it two in a row for Poly and bumps their season record up to 4-5. The victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 28 points in those games. As for Verdugo Hills, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-6.

Looking ahead, Poly will head out to take on Arleta at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Parrots will need to watch out since the Mustangs have now posted at least 31 points in their last three matchups. As for Verdugo Hills, they will square off against Grant at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
