Softball Recap: Montezuma-Cortez Takes a Loss

Montezuma-Cortez had lost five straight at home dating back to last season, but on Saturday they dropped down to 0-4 to make it six. They lost 22-12 to the Gunnison Cowboys. On the bright side, the 12- run performance marked the Panthers' highest-scoring matchup to date.

Jayden White and Ava Hawkins stepped up to the plate in a big way. White went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double, while Hawkins went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Hawkins is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season. Another player making a difference was Paislee Mestas, who went 1-for-3 with three runs.

As for Gunnison, they have started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. Surprisingly, this marked their eighth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

On Gunnison's side, the team relied heavily on Kaylee Vincent, who went 4-for-5 with eight RBI, three runs, and one triple. Those four hits gave Vincent a new career-high. Romie Uhrig was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Montezuma-Cortez will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Durango at 3:00 p.m. on the 26th. As for Gunnison, they will take on Montrose at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
