Basketball Recap: McKinleyville Takes a Loss

McKinleyville was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They fell 51-42 to the St. Bernard's Crusaders. The Panthers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Crusaders apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Leading St. Bernard's to victory were Laila Florvilus and Carli Baum. Florvilus dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten boards, while Baum went 6 for 10 on her way to 14 points. Florvilus has been hot recently, having posted nine or more rebounds the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Aliyah Vigil, who posted three points along with five boards and five steals.

McKinleyville's defeat dropped their record down to 15-8. As for St. Bernard's, the win was the 12th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 21-1.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. McKinleyville has already played their next matchup (against Del Norte), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. St. Bernard's will welcome Ferndale at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (St. Bernard's has won eight straight at home dating back to last season, while Ferndale won four straight on the road), something that'll have to change.
