Newport had lost four straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped down to 7-20 to make it five. They fell 9-5 to the Cascade Cougars. Unfortunately, that's the fourth time they've come up short against the Cougars this season, with their most recent loss being a 9-0 defeat on Wednesday.
Ryder Hockema put in work no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). What's more, he gave up only one walk, the fewest he's had since back in April. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double.

In other batting news, Collin Fierro was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Newport's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 3-19 when he doesn't).
As for Cascade, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 13-18 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games.
On Cascade's side, the team relied heavily on Jacob Born, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and four RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Born a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jayden Carlock, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
As of now, neither Newport nor Cascade have any future games scheduled.
