Softball Preview: Cozad Haymakers vs. McCook Bison
The Cozad Haymakers will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against the McCook Bison. Cozad will be strutting in after a victory while McCook will be coming in after a loss.
On Saturday, Cozad narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Mercy 6-5.
Madison Sayer spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and three unearned) runs on five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't pitched less than five innings every time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Sara Howell was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Kinley Armagost, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Meanwhile, McCook didn't have quite enough to beat Lincoln Northwest on Saturday and fell 3-2.
McCook saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Malia Hilker, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Cozad now has a winning record of 4-3. As for McCook, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-3.
Cozad skirted past McCook 4-3 in their previous matchup back in August of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for Cozad since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
