Recap: Mar Vista Mariners vs. Chula Vista Spartans
After flying high against the San Ysidro Cougars on Friday, the Mar Vista Mariners came back down to earth. Mar Vista was outmatched by Chula Vista on the road and fell 69-35. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Mar Vista in their matchups with Chula Vista: they've now lost eight in a row.
Mar Vista lost on Saturday despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Melanie Carrisoza, who scored ten points. Those ten points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Sharlyn Vera Bojorquez, who scored nine points.
Malissa Mckoy was her usual excellent self, scoring 38 points along with nine rebounds and four steals for Chula Vista. That makes it 14 consecutive games in which Mckoy has scored at least 25% of Chula Vista's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ta'mya Lewis, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 23 rebounds.
Mar Vista has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-5 record this season. As for Chula Vista, their victory bumped their record up to 7-9.
Mar Vista will be playing in front of their home fans against Madison at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Madison focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 last Friday. Chula Vista's road trip will continue as they head out to face O'Farrell Charter at 6:00 p.m. on January 2nd. O'Farrell Charter's defense has only allowed 24.6 points per game this season, so Chula Vista's offense will have their work cut out for Chula Vista.
