California high school football: Week 2 top 25 schedule, scores

St. John Bosco, Long Beach Poly face major out-of-state tests.

This week's California high school football schedule is headlined by No. 14 Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) at national No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) in their second straight out-of-state contest. The Jackrabbits opened the 2023 season with a 60-28 win over Konawaena (Kealakekua, Hawaii).

Another game with national implications is St. John Bosco (Bellflower) traveling to Florida to take on Sunshine State power St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale). The Braves, who are the state No. 2 and No. 3 in the MaxPreps Top 25, opened the season with a 42-22 win over Liberty (Henderson, Nev.). Head coach Jason Negro's squad hasn't lost an out-of-state game since August of 2017 when they fell 9-7 to the same St. Thomas Aquinas program they will battle Saturday on ESPN2.
 
A matchup of state-ranked teams features No. 3 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) at No. 16 Oaks Christian (Westlake Village). The Trailblazers won a defensive battle last week, 9-7 over JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) as freshman Richard Wesley stopped a late drive with a tackle for loss to preserve the win. Oaks Christian beat Chaminade (West Hills) 55-28 in its opener.

No. 7 Orange Lutheran (Orange) travels to Northern California to take on No. 17 De La Salle (Concord). The Lancers beat Serra (Gardena) 47-19 in their opener as the Spartans take the field for the first time in 2023.
