Basketball Recap: Hilmar Gets the Win

Hughson came into Thursday's match looking for another win against Hilmar, but Emma Gomes wouldn't allow it. The Hilmar Yellowjackets sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 33-31 win over the Hughson Huskies on Thursday thanks in part to Gomes, who went 6 of 11 en route to 13 points along with eight boards and six steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Hilmar's points.

The team also got some help courtesy of Madalyn Alvares, who posted seven points and eight rebounds. Those eight boards gave her a new career-high.

Hughson's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Adisyn Powers, who put up seven points and three steals.

Hilmar's record now sits at 5-12. As for Hughson, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost 11 of their last 12 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-16 record this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Ripon the next time they take the court. Hilmar will head out to face Ripon at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, while Hughson will head out to face them at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
