Basketball Recap: Zoha Shahriyar's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Escondido Charter over Murrieta Valley

Escondido Charter saw some tournament action on Tuesday. They fell 57-50 to the Murrieta Valley Nighthawks. The Tigers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Several Tigers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Zoha Shahriyar, who posted eight points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. The dominant performance gave Shahriyar a new career-high in boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Azalea Vilaysing, who went 6 of 10 on her way to 15 points and three steals.

Murrieta Valley was led to victory by Valerie Lauritzen and Peyton Axene. Lauritzen had 19 points in addition to seven boards and three steals, while Axene went 7 of 13 on her way to 17 points. Axene continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Alysia Maldonado Murray, who put up eight points in addition to six boards and five steals.

Escondido Charter's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Murrieta Valley, their victory bumped their record up to 5-2.

Escondido Charter wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 74-34 win against Vista on the 6th. As for Murrieta Valley, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 59-38 defeat against Rancho Bernardo on the 4th.
