Football Recap: Manzano Picks Up Fourth Consecutive Victory

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Manzano). They put the hurt on the Portales Rams with a sharp 40-14 victory on Friday. Winning may never get old, but the Monarchs sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.

Manzano's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Bodi True led the charge by throwing for 305 yards and five touchdowns while completing 72% of his passes. The dominant performance also gave True a new career-high in passer rating (119.2). Manzano's leading receiver Broden Price was True's top target yet again, picking up 108 receiving yards and three scores.

Manzano's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB five times. In that department, Vince Varela was the leader with three sacks. Another thorn in Portales' side was Nick Barela, who made five total tackles and defended two passes in addition to snagging two interceptions.

When it comes to explaining why Portales lost, don't look at Slade Segovia. Despite the final result, he rushed for 143 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 8.4 yards per carry. Segovia showed off some serious burst, turning on the afterburners on one carry for 62 yards.

Manzano's win bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Portales, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Manzano will take on Chaparral at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Monarchs will need to watch out since the Lobos have now posted at least 31 points in their last three contests. As for Portales, they will challenge Valencia at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Jaguars' defense has only allowed 15 points per game this season, so the Rams' offense will have their work cut out for them.
