Basketball Recap: Rio Mesa Comes Up Short

Rio Mesa lost against Ventura back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Rio Mesa Spartans were dealt a 76-20 defeat at the hands of the Ventura Cougars. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 474th, while the Cougars are ranked tenth).

Ventura's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kailee Staniland, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 assists. Staniland's morning made it four games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Brinley Anderson, who went 9 for 18 en route to 19 points along with seven rebounds and three steals.

Rio Mesa is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 10-15. As for Ventura, the win (which was their 23rd in a row) raised their record to 24-2.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Ventura beat Rio Mesa by a score of 76-20 on Thursday.
