Basketball Recap: Iyla Ozbey Key Part of a Team Effort in Colts Win

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against South Fayette, Chartiers Valley was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They managed a 46-42 win over the Mars Fightin' Planets. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 57-41 back in January.

Chartiers Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Iyla Ozbey led the charge by going 5 of 8 to rack up 13 points. That's the most points Ozbey has posted since back in January of 2024. Rachel Boehm was another key player, putting up 12 points and four steals.

Chartiers Valley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in nine consecutive games.

Mars' defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Vita Vargo, who went 5 for 11 on her way to 13 points and four steals. Vargo is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Alexis Cashdollar, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds.

Chartiers Valley has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season. As for Mars, their loss dropped their record down to 12-9.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Chartiers Valley will head out to challenge Upper St. Clair at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Mars, they will venture away from home to square off against North Hills at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
