Monarchs upend Ontario Christian for title, will meet Knights again in two weeks in San Francisco Bay Area.

Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) climbs to No. 1 in the latest MaxPreps Top 25 high school girls basketball rankings on the strength of its second straight Nike Tournament of Champions title.

The Monarchs flip with No. 2 Ontario Christian (Ontario, Calif.) after beating the Knights 59-34 for the Vincent Cannizzaro Division title. Last year, Mitty beat Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.) 73-72 for the title and held the top spot until the final day of the season, falling for the second straight year to MaxPreps National Champion Etiwanda (Calif.) in California's Open Division final.

"We want to move the needle forward on our improvement because we want to win the last game," Archbishop Mitty head coach Sue Phillips told MaxPreps. "That's the game that matters most to us."

Mitty has reached the Open Division title game in each of the past three seasons, falling to Etiwanda twice and Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) in 2022. The Monarchs' last state championship came in 2015 when they won the Division II crown.

Ontario Christian, which starts two freshman and super sophomore Kaleena Smith, has played a national schedule thus far and has a chance to earn one back against Mitty as the teams will meet Jan. 4 at the SI20 Showcase in the San Francisco Bay Area.
