Baseball Recap: Coronado Comes Up Short

Coronado extended their losing streak to ten on Friday, dropping them down to 7-21. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at the hands of the St. Augustine Saints. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Saints this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 6-4 on Wednesday.

As for St. Augustine, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-17. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.5 runs across that stretch.

For St. Augustine's part, Jonny Haskett spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up 15 Ks. Haskett is becoming a predictor of the Saints' success: when he posts at least eight strikeouts the team is undefeated (and 8-17 when he doesn't).

At the plate, St. Augustine saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mario Vitale, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Coronado and St. Augustine are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Islanders will face off against La Jolla Country Day at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for St. Augustine, they will take on San Ysidro at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
