Basketball Recap: Walker Montague and Ben Whitney Secure Win for Cardinal Gibbons

Cardinal Gibbons had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They snuck past the Cape Fear Academy Hurricanes with a 65-61 victory on Friday.

Cardinal Gibbons was led to victory by Ben Whitney and Walker Montague. Whitney shot 70% from the field en route to 23 points and seven boards, while Montague went 8-for-10 to rack up 20 points. Those 23 points gave Whitney a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ty Lange, who posted eight points and eight rebounds.

Cape Fear Academy lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Luke Fascher, who shot 60% from the field on his way to 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Milo? Pavlicic, who earned nine points and five boards.

Cape Fear Academy is on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Looking ahead, Cardinal Gibbons will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Hillside at 7:00 p.m. As for Cape Fear Academy, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 47-46 win against Crossroads Christian on the 15th.
