Basketball Recap: Mount Miguel Takes a Loss

Mount Miguel was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their tenth straight defeat. They were dealt a 62-25 loss at the hands of the Helix Highlanders. While losing is never fun, the Matadors can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1091st, while the Highlanders are ranked 483rd).

Despite the loss, Mount Miguel still got an impressive performance from Laylah Castro, who posted 14 points. That was a full 56% of Mount Miguel's points, marking the sixth time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Aiyanna Sinsay, who scored seven points.

Helix was led to victory by Cheyenne McMillan and Michaelle Whyte. McMillan went 8 of 19 on her way to 26 points in addition to seven rebounds and seven steals, while Whyte put up 18 points and three steals. The dominant performance gave McMillan a new career-high in steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Semaj Fort, who posted five points and seven rebounds.

Mount Miguel's defeat dropped their record down to 2-15. As for Helix, their win bumped their record up to 8-6.

Mount Miguel wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 42-37 loss against Valhalla on the 14th. As for Helix, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 53-33 defeat against Grossmont on the 14th.
