Basketball Recap: Sanger West Takes a Loss

Sanger West was the 43-36 winner over Sunnyside when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Sanger West Hornets took a 52-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Sunnyside Wildcats on Thursday. The Hornets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

When it comes to explaining why Sanger West lost, don't look at Soha Khan. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 22 points and 12 boards. Khan continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Shelbi Castaneda was another key player, putting up six points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Sanger West smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Ruby Cartwright continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Sunnyside, dropping a double-double on 29 points and 11 boards. The matchup was Cartwright's eighth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Leah Garcia, who posted 13 points and three steals.

Sanger West's defeat dropped their record down to 13-13. As for Sunnyside, their victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-12.

Sanger West has already played their next contest, a 45-43 win against Madera South on the 4th. As for Sunnyside, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 66-45 victory against Madera on the 4th.
