Recap: Downey Vikings vs. Lynwood Knights

The Downey Vikings were the 39-33 winner over the Lynwood Knights when they last played one another on January 10th, but their luck changed this time around. Downey fell 51-39 to Lynwood on Friday.

Downey's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Symantha Barnett, who scored eight points along with nine rebounds and four steals. Barnett has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Olivia Vaughn, who scored 13 points along with three steals.

Taliyah Mcferson was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 23 points and 11 rebounds for Lynwood. Kimiko Kennedy was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.

Downey's defeat dropped their record down to 14-12. As for Lynwood, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-11 record this season.

Downey will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Gahr at 5:15 p.m. Gahr will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 317th, while Downey is ranked 114th). As for Lynwood, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Village Christian at 4:30 p.m. on January 27th. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Village Christian sitting on five straight victories and Lynwood on four.
