Preview: Don Lugo Conquistadores vs. West Covina Bulldogs
Having just played yesterday, the Don Lugo Conquistadores will head out on the road to face off against the West Covina Bulldogs at 5:00 p.m. on December 13th. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Don Lugo has three straight wins, West Covina has eight straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Don Lugo ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, they made off with a 50-49 victory over Montclair. The victory was all the more spectacular given Don Lugo's disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 570th, while Montclair is ranked 220th).
Don Lugo's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sarah Magadan, who scored 21 points along with three steals. That makes it eight consecutive games in which Magadan has scored at least 25% of Don Lugo's points. Makena Encarnacion was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with 15 rebounds.
Meanwhile, West Covina came up short against South Hills on Monday and fell 39-30.
Don Lugo's win bumped their record up to 5-3. As for West Covina, they bumped their record down to 1-9 with that loss, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season.
Don Lugo came out on top in a nail-biter against West Covina when the teams last played back in December of 2022, sneaking past 41-39. The rematch might be a little tougher for Don Lugo since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
