The Marshwood Hawks will face off against the Cheverus Stags at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
The home team had won the previous three meetings between Marshwood and South Portland, and South Portland kept the tradition alive. The Hawks took a 9-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Red Riots on Thursday.
Marshwood saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gavin Villineau, who went 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Cheverus had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7 runs) and they went ahead and made it seven on Thursday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Mustangs a 4-0 shutout.
The result came thanks to Colton Jewett's shutout, as he gave up just a hit and racked up 14 Ks. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Joe Mancini was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Will Baker, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.
Marshwood dropped their record down to 2-9 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Cheverus, their victory bumped their record up to 11-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Marshwood has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Cheverus struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Marshwood got the 'W' in their previous matchup back in May of 2025 against Cheverus by a conclusive 9-1 score. Do the Hawks have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Stags turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
