Basketball Recap: Canyon Takes a Loss

Canyon was the 70-64 winner over Oxnard when they last played one another back in November of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. The Canyon Cowboys fell 63-55 to the Oxnard Yellowjackets on Friday. The Cowboys were down 54-34 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.

When it comes to explaining why Canyon lost, don't look at Darby Dunn. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 29 points and ten assists. Dunn has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last ten times she's played. Shannen Wilson was another key player, dropping a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Canyon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in January.

Oxnard's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kayla Lumas led the charge by going 7 of 11 on her way to 16 points and seven rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Sienna Angell, who posted nine points and seven steals.

This is the second loss in a row for Canyon and nudges their season record down to 8-8. As for Oxnard, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-5.

Canyon wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 93-70 loss against Buena Park on the 28th. As for Oxnard, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 60-51 victory against St. Bonaventure on the 28th.
