Baseball Recap: Eureka Comes Up Short

Eureka fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Maroa-Forsyth on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Trojans by a score of 6-5. The Hornets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Eureka got a good showing from Brody Wertz, who didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched.

At the plate, John Martin and Teagan McLaughlin stepped up to the plate in a big way. Martin went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and two RBI, while McLaughlin got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. McLaughlin has become a key player for Eureka: the team is 7-3 when he posts at least two runs, but 6-14 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Landon Wurmnest, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Eureka's loss dropped their record down to 13-17. As for Maroa-Forsyth, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 14 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-9-1 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Eureka will venture away from home to face off against Princeton at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Tigers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.64 runs per game on average), something the Hornets will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Maroa-Forsyth, they will challenge St. Teresa at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
